Heath delighted as AFC secure third place

AFC Dunstable secured third place in the Molten Spartan SML Premier Division with a 3-0 win at Sun Sports on Tuesday night.

Prior to kick off, both sides were in the running for third spot, with Sports needing to win.

However, but for a 10 minute spell in the second half, the visitors pulled the strings for the other 80 minutes.

AFC made one change from Saturday, with Jamie Warne coming in for Brandon Carney.

Steve Heath’s side were on the front foot straight from kick off, as they played some very attractive football.

Keeping the ball for long periods, they created numerous chances, striking the crossbar twice.

AFC took a deserved lead, when Wayne Mills played in Jermaine Hall, who finished with a low shot on 22 minutes.

AFC continued to press and Sun’s keeper kept the score at 1-0 with some good saves.

There was still time for Grant Fryer to hit the woodwork again, while Leon Cashman was just wide.

In the second period, Sports had a good spell of pressure as Ricky Perks needed to make two smart stops.

Usual business was soon resumed though, as AFC started to move the ball quickly as Hall struck the bar, with both follow-ups cleared off the line twice.

However, on 75 minutes, Cashman finally eased any nerves when he blasted home to make it 2-0.

Not happy with that, AFC went all out for the third which arrived courtesy of Mills’ fine cross, headed home by Hal got goal number 26 in all competitions.

Reflecting on third place, boss Heath said: “Apart from that period in the second half when Perks had to make those two saves, I thought we put in a perfect display, our best performance for a little while and especially against a top six side.

“With our last game coming up on Saturday, I would like to put on record to say, it has been a complete joy working with this set of players.

“The team has changed quite alot since the beginning of the season and the players who have come in have been a treat. I would like to thank them all for their commitment they have showed right until the end of the season.

“You think, some might have cried off from games and training once the title had gone, but not these players.”

AFC visit Hadley this weekend.
