Hoenes at the double as Barton go fifth

Barton Rovers moved into play-off places with a 2-0 victory over St Ives Town on Tuesday night.

The hosts didn’t take long to move ahead as after eight minutes, Jack Keating won the ball and found Rhys Hoenes who calmly slotted home.

Within five minutes of the restart, Ben Sawyer picked up the ball just inside his own half, and went on an amazing run beating five players before picking out Hoenes who hit a first time shot over keeper Tim Trebes only to see it cannon off the crossbar.

However, it was 2-0 when Lucas Perry won the ball at left back, and picked out Sawyer in midfield, who in turn fed Hoenes.

The striker left the visitors defence in his wake and found the top corner, giving Trebes no chance.

Barton dominated the remainder of the first half creating several more excellent chances, with Lewis Putman and Russell Bull coming close to adding a third.

Rovers keeper Kyle Forster was called into action on 55 minutes, when he saved a free kick that was bending into the net.

St Ives didn’t give up the battle and fought hard but Barton stayed solid throughout the second half, limiting the visitors to long range shots.

The result saw Barton climb to fifth and now host second-placed Aylesbury this weekend.
