Howells excited with the direction Hatters are heading

The 24-year-old, who has played 326 times for the club, is now under his seventh manager since coming through the ranks back in 2007.

On how he has found life working under Jones, who had an extensive background in coaching prior to his appointment, Howells said: “Everything the gaffer is trying to do is small steps like he has said a few times. We’re working on that every day and he’s coaching us every day which has been brilliant.

“The boys have been impressed with him and everyone is improving under him and playing the way he wants us to play.”

Howells, who has admitted he is playing for his future now, with his contract ending in the summer, is anticipating Luton finally starting to relive some of their past glories with Jones at the helm.

He continued: “I think the gaffer will bring in players that will take us as high as possible.

“I see us improving each game and feel like we’ve got a chance of going up and getting to where we should be as a club.

“How long it takes I don’t know, we’ve got to keep working hard and make it happen.”

Jones’ possession-based style of play is also winning plenty of plaudits amongst players and fans alike, as recent signing Alan Sheehan added: “That’s the way football should be played, I like to pass, hoofing the thing probably wouldn’t suit us.

“I like to get on the ball and play out. The manager’s come in and it’s only been two or three games, but I think people are seeing a major improvement in the style of football already.

“It’s going to take time for things to go right, but people are impatient, I’m impatient as well. I want to be winning ever single game, especially in this division.”
