Barton Rovers ended their seven game winless run with an impressive 2-0 win at Fleet Town on Saturday.

After their Beds County Cup success on Tuesday night, Rovers manager Jon Reed wanted to make sure the journey to Hampshire wasn’t an ‘after the Lord Mayors show’ performance and the squad didn’t disappoint.

With several absentees through injury, the depleted squad allowed a debut for youngster Ollie Gwynne fresh from his U21 side’s own County Cup final success.

The hosts looked the sharper in the opening stages, but Rovers found their feet as Jack Keating saw his shot fly agonisingly wide.

Alex O’Brien’s effort then hit the outside of the post, before Barton moved ahead on 16 minutes as Tyler Ingham pounced on a loose ball to beat his man and fire past Ryan Pryce.

The visitors then defended stoutly and might have gone further aead as O’Brien saw his shot deflected behind.

After the break, Rovers dominated proceedings, with O’Brien going close twice, before James Bishop’s thunderous drive produced a superb save.

However, Rovers doubled their advantage on the hour mark with a carbon copy of their opening goal, with Ingham again going through to calmly slot into the net.

Late on, Fleet had a good chance with 10 minutes to go, but Kyle Forster palmed over the bar as Barton comfortably held on.

Rovers, who climbed to 17th in the table, travel to North Greenford United this evening.
