‘Invincible’ Dunstable aim to go through the season unbeaten

‘Invincibles’ Dunstable Town are hoping for a bumper crowd at Creasey Park on Saturday when they receive the Molten Spartan SML Premier Division trophy and also have the chance to make history, writes Mark Wood.

If they can avoid defeat against Hatfield Town it is believed they would become the first team in the league’s history to go unbeaten all season, as they currently boast a record of 35 wins, six draws and no defeats from 41 games, having scored 141 goals and conceded just 33.

And director of football John McLoughlin is desperate for his side to emulate the likes of Arsenal and Preston who went unbeaten in the top flight in 2003-04 and 1888–89 respectively.

He said: “We are being presented with the championship trophy on April, 27, when we host Hatfield Town FC and we welcome everyone from Dunstable and Luton to come and see the Invincibles and join in the party.

Gates open at 1.30pm and entrance is £6 for adults, £4 for concessions and £1 for a child accompanied by an adult, with the trophy to be present afterwards.

SSML committee member Bill Scholes said: “It would be a tremendous achievement. We haven’t had such a decisive winner in some time.”

Chief Executive of the Bedfordshire FA, Keith Stroud, hailed their potential feat, saying: “On behalf of Bedfordshire FA we congratulate the club for a tremendous season, promotion and the potentially almost unheard of achievement of remaining unbeaten through a complete season. We wish the club well for the future.”

The Blues are set to be promoted to Evo-Stik Southern League Division One Central, as McLoughlin continued: “I am delighted to be moving closer to our goals.

“When we came back to the club we were always ambitious and we have a five-year plan to get back into the Southern Premier League and then go on from there, but we have had two great seasons and we will be looking to get into the play-offs as a minimum goal for next season.

“The team has produced an exceptional season and it shows what can be achieved with a good committee, good supporters and great players we have put DTFC back on the non-league map and gained the respect from everyone.

“We have now attracted a great consortium of local businessman who are also ambitious and we have given stability to a football club who have a great future.

“We welcome everyone to come and see what we have achieved and to see what we have to offer.

“I would like to thank everyone who has supported us this year and to all of our sponsors, without this support we could not achieve the goals we are aiming for.”
