Jones bemoans trio of errors during Bees defeat

Luton chief Nathan Jones blamed a trio of bad decisions from his side for preventing his gameplan from working to a tee against Barnet on Monday.

The visitors had been up against a strong wind in the first half but kept everything that the Bees could throw, quite literally, at them, repelling Sam Muggleton’s missile-like deliveries.

Jones had set his side up to then come on strong in the second period and with the conditions in their favour, they should have, only to fall behind inside the opening five minutes, and eventually lose 2-1 to a last-gasp penalty.

The boss said: “We knew it would be tight, we said ‘just stay in the game’ and then the game would open up and we’ll be able to make subs and bring on game changers who’ll hopefully win us the game.

“But we conceded a poor, poor, poor goal. Decision making cost us and then right in the last minute, we’re in control of the game, going for the winner and we decide to make bad decisions again.

“I thought apart from three bad decisions we had no problems in the game whatsoever, our goalkeeper didn’t have to make a save, but three bad decisions have cost us.”

Jones had kept the likes of Paddy McCourt and Danny Green on the bench until the latter stages when they tried to force the win, with McCourt in particular almost managing to do so.

The boss continued: “We felt we were going to need some strength and pace and energy because of how Barnet play. So we picked it to stay in the game, for 55-60 minutes and then we were going to make substitutes that when the game opened up to try and win it.

“It went exactly how we thought, apart from
them scoring the first goal which we didn’t want to happen.

“The trouble was they nicked the first goal, so then we had to chase it, but as far as the game went, that’s how we envisaged it going, exactly that.

“We got the goal back and I felt there was only going to be one winner then, but then two bad decisions have cost us at the end and it’s frustrating.”
