Town took on Championship and League One play-off semi-finalists Brighton and Walsall during pre-season, beating the Seagulls 2-1 and losing to the Saddlers 1-0 on Saturday.

After viewing both opposition at close quarters. Jones said: “We’ve had our squad in for quite a big period of time so been able to work with them, they’re at a good level.

“We’ve played against at home, a Championship play-off side and a League One play-off side, and I don’t see the gap being massive.

“In a year’s time we want to be a League One side and I don’t see the gap is that big at the minute that we can’t bridge it.”

On how he felt his first pre-season campaign as manager of the Hatters has gone, Jones continued: “It’s been enjoyable, we’ve penned down a formation, two formations really in what we do and how we work.

“We’ve managed to get a group that’s fit and hungry, wants to play, and now you feel you’re ready.

“You don’t know if you’re ready but feel you’re ready in terms of pre-season has gone.”

Striker Danny Hylton has also been impressed by the playing personnel that Jones has put together at Kenilworth Road too, adding: “I think it’s coming along quite well.

“We’ve only been together four or five weeks, so there’s still a lot more to come, but there’s signs there to show we’ve got a real good squad.”
