Jones interested in re-signing Derby keeper Mitchell

Hatters boss Nathan Jones has reiterated his desire to re-sign Derby County goalkeeper Jonathan Mitchell should a deal be possible.

The 21-year-old made five appearances for the Hatters after joining on loan from Derby County in March, with the Championship side recalling him to Pride Park after an injury to Lee Grant.

With Elliot Justham leaving Kenilworth Road last week, a new goalkeeper is one of the top targets for Jones, and he confirmed Mitchell is high on his list.

Jones continued: “Of course because he was probably the one that we really wanted to bring in before we did.

“We were very fortunate to get him, albeit it for a short period of time, but we were very privileged to have had him.

“We would have liked to have kept him longer, but that wasn’t to be.

“So if there’s a possibility he came available again, then we would definitely be open to taking him. But we have targets in every position, so none of those will change.

“We’ll be following those up, and not just one, we probably have four, that’s just our recruitment planning.

“It’s not just, ‘wow we’ve lost a keeper what do we do?’

“We were going to bring another one in anyway, and now that’s just slightly changed things, but nothing massive.

“We’re in no massive hurry to do it, but we see it as a vitally important position and we’ll fill it accordingly.”

Meanwhile, Jones is happy with Craig King as his number two for the new campaign, as he added: “He’s filled in very well, and with the new rules on keepers we’ve got to be careful what we do.

“But Craig King is in the building, while young Liam Gooch has done very well as well.”
