Jones may mix the squad up against Oxford

Hatters boss Nathan Jones has admitted he may well continue his rotation policy for the Checkatrade Trophy semi-final tie with Oxford United at Kenilworth Road tomorrow night.

The Luton chief has made a host of changes to his side throughout the competition thus, the least being in the previous round against Yeovil, where he opted for just five alterations.

With a busy week ahead though in terms of fixtures, Jones said: "We’re going to have to use the squad for three games, from Saturday, Wednesday, Saturday and the difficult game away at Yeovil.

"I reiterate, I’ve used the squad. Very rarely have we kept the same side, when we have we’ve actually lost games. So it's about using the squad and the quality we’ve got, that’s why I pushed to get those numbers in and get the type of player we did.

"Not all players will play the three games, so we will mix the squad up either for Wednesday or for Saturday so we’ll see where we are.”

Right back Stephen O’Donnell missed Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Plymouth after pulling out injured late on, with James Justin coming in and on the Scottish defender’s chances of being fit, Jones said: “He might be, it’s just a little bit of soreness so we just have to wait to see if that subsides.

“He just felt his ankle last week and tried to play through it but couldn't. It was a little bit unfortunate as I don’t like making changes that late, but we had to as it was enforced.

"Thanks to the squad we’ve got and the quality of competition, so it didn’t hurt us in the end.

“We’ve got a big week ahead in terms of three in a week, so he’s O’Donnell missed one, but I would have made changes anyway."

Fellow defender Dan Potts is back in contention now too after not playing since injuring his knee against Barnet on December 31.

On whether he’s be included or not, Jones continued: “I’d consider putting him in as he’s had two and a half weeks of training now and the way we train and extras he gets, it won’t be much of a problem.

“It’s just whether we consider it right to put him in now or Saturday, or get him a game beforehand.

“He’s a super fit lad anyway, played a lot of games this year, so it won’t be too much of a gamble if we did.”

Meanwhile, when asked about Jake Gray, who despite scoring twice in three games recently, hasn’t featured in Town's last five matches, left out of the matchday squad at times too, Jones added: “It’s competition, it’s just been that and the squad, there’s fierce competition, there really is.

"I look for stuff in training, look for edges they give me and who we’ve got, because he’s competing with the likes of Pelly-Ruddock who’s in fine form, Luke Gambin who we’ve just paid money for, Jordan Cook who’s in very, very good form.

“So it’s what you should thrive on as a footballer. That’s what we’re looking for Jake to do, give us that reaction that he really wants to play and when he does, take his opportunity.

“Of course (he’s doing that). If people don’t train at that level then it shows up as we’ve got a good group that want to train at that level.

"The intensity is very, very good in what we do, we demand from players but we get a lot back.”
