A defeat against Stevenage on Saturday, plus Tuesday night’s goalless draw at Carlisle United, has seen Luton fall seven points behind third placed Portsmouth, albeit with a game in hand.

However, Jones said: “On Saturday we could have gone into the top three, Portsmouth have won two games on the spin, they’re a good side, they’re going to do that.

“What we have to do is make sure we keep in touch because we’ve got a lot of games coming up, a lot of games we’ll be looking forward to going in to.

“We’re not too concerned yet as it’s not a massive one. If we win our game in hand, we’re not too far off, so we’re not going to get too down about it as it’s still well in hand.

“If we win on Saturday it’s been a good week all in all, and then we have our game in hand which we have to take advantage of.

“What we want to be on Saturday is be in a position where we can take advantage of our game in hand.”

Hatters will try to get back to winning ways against another side locked in a battle for promotion, Exeter City, this weekend, with the Grecians just one point behind Town in seventh.

Midfielder Olly Lee is glad to be playing a side in direct competition with them, saying: “It’s good to be playing teams around us, you can stop them getting the points and we can get the points.

“All you can do is beat what’s ahead of you. The league’s very up and down as if you saw it a couple of weeks ago, you wouldn’t have thought we could get in the automatic, then we’re in touching distance again.

“It’s been frustrating as we’ve played really well consistently throughout the season, but just couldn’t quite put the run together that other teams have, but maybe were due it now,

“There’s still 10 games to go, if we win 10, we’ll go up.”

Lee also felt his side should have been celebrating another away victory at Brunton Park in midweek, adding: “I thought we deserved to win over the 90 minutes, we had enough chances to put it to bed, but unfortunately it wasn’t to be.

“It was a good game against a decent side and hopefully we’ll kick on from now.

“We didn’t want to lose two in a row, it’s not like us to lose two in a row, so credit to keeping a clean sheet.

“It was one of those days where the ball just didn’t want to go in the net. They’ve pulled off some great blocks, the keeper’s pulled off a couple of saves, so it just wasn’t meant to be.”
