Hatters boss Nathan Jones has urged winger Danny Green to show his true potential on a more consistent basis for the club.

The summer signing from MK Dons hasn’t had the impact he would have hoped to make after dropping down from the Championship side in the summer, despite being Town’s third highest score with six goals this term.

After picking up an injury during Jones’ first game in charge, Green was handed back to back starts against Hartlepool and York City in February, but then dropped to the bench, before returning to the side against former club Dagenham & Redbridge on Tuesday night.

Jones said: “He’s one that needs a run of games and needs certain things, but we know what Greeny has.

“He was wonderful ability, wonderful quality, it’s just we need to get a bit more out of him on a regular basis, which Greeny knows, which I’ve spoken to him about, I constantly speak to him about.

“He’s made a big commitment to us, personally to me, so I’m interested to see how get on with Greeny.

“He has real, real quality and we just need to get that out of him on far, far more occasions and if we do that, then we’ll be a better side, so it’s just simple facts.

“If we we can get more productivity out of him, we’ll be a better side.”

Green’s crossing ability from the flank and set-piece delivery is widely regarded, although Jones wants even more than that from the wideman going forward.

He continued: “We can’t just rely on that. Our wide men have to have a potency about them, have to be real good athletes, have to cover big distances.

“They have to contribute, have to defend, have to do a lot, and that’s what we need to improve.

“He proved the other night he’s willing to do it, and he’s made a big commitment to me which not a lot of people know but he has, and I’m pleased and hope he continues to do that.”

When asked what that commitment was, Jones didn’t go into detail, adding: “It’s a private thing between me and Greeny and I have those things with my players.

“He’s done it, shown a real commitment to the club and to me and it’s good.

“Now he has to back that up and go from there.”
