The hosts then went straight down the other end to take the points through Matt Godden’s last-gasp strike, as Lee said: “I couldn’t believe it. I’ve hit it sweetly and I thought, ‘that’s in the top bag’, but it was not to be.

“We kept pushing, kept pushing and both sets hit the post, they hit the bar, we hit the bar, so a bit end-to-end, we went to try and win the game but ended up losing it.

“We’re obviously all devastated, we felt we deserved the win. We needed to be a bit more clinical in the final third. We outplayed them but just couldn’t get that goal and they’ve hit us with a killer one.

“We felt we had more than enough chances to win the game but it was just one of those days where the ball wouldn’t go in the net for us.”

Lee almost then salvaged an unlikely point after Godden’s goal, with another low effort from range flying just wide of Jamie Jones’ right hand post.

He added: “Again, I thought, ‘maybe if I hit the target here it’s a goal’, but it just wasn’t to be. It summed up a frustrating day for us. I feel we played really well with the ball and it just wasn’t to be.”

It wasn’t just Lee who came close too though, as Town missed a host of chances through Danny Hylton’s one-on-one, while Jordan Cook was wide, with Boro keeper Jamie Jones pulling off a number of saves and Luton denied what looked a clear penalty when Dean Wells handled the ball in the area.

Lee added: “It was ridiculous. The ball just didn’t seem to want to go in for us. I think their lad was lying on the line with the ball underneath him and the ball just wouldn’t go in.

“It was one of those frustrating days for us. We’ve got to be a bit more clinical to win the game but we’ve got to move on to the next one and learn the lesson from this and we won’t let it happen again.”
