Lee thrilled to finally bag a winner

Hatters match-winner Olly Lee was thrilled to grab the first winning goal of his career as Hatters ended their long search for a victory at York City on Saturday with a 3-2 triumph.

The 23-year-old has scored eight goals previously, with his only other Hatters strike, one that put the icing on the cake of a 4-1 triumph at Hartlepool back in October.

However this time, there was no doubting the importance, or quality from the midfielder, as in stoppage time, he set off on a mazy dribble from near enough the half way line, and then crashed a low shot past Michael Ingham into the bottom corner.

Lee said: “It was a really nice moment, probably the first winner I’ve scored in my career, so nice to get a last minute one.

“It’s not particularly my job to be up there, the gaffer’s probably fuming that I got that far!

“But I enjoyed that, I haven’t scored for a little while, so it was as long time coming, but worth the wait.”

On the actual goal itself, Lee continued: “To be honest, when I got it from the throw, I didn’t have much on, so I just thought all right, let’s keep running, it just kept opening up, so I thought, just have a go and it’s in, happy days.

“When (Danny) Green threw it to me I wanted to pass to someone, but there was no-one there, so I just thought I’ll drive and there’ll hopefully be somebody to bounce it off.

“But it just kept opening up for me to shoot so it was a nice goal.

“It’s right up there for me, I’m excited to see it back.”

Fellow goalscorer Cameron McGeehan was hugely impressed with the quality of his team-mate’s effort as well, saying: “I don’t think he can score unless it’s outside 20 yards, it was a lovely goal and Olly’s got that in his locker.

“He’s a bit of technician. He gets us going on the ball and looks to dominate games from that sitting position, so when he can add those goals, it’s very helpful.

“He’s another good player to have around me as he’s another young one who’s looking to ply his trade and go further up with Luton, so Olly’s a great player.”

Lee, who doubled his goals tally for the Hatters with the wonder strike, is now looking to add more in the final 13 games of the season.

He added: “It will be nice to keep getting a few more goals, as it would have been nice to have got a few more at this point of the season.

“So hopefully I can go on a little run now and I can chip in with a few more throughout the course of the season.”
