The 20-year-old played a major role in the game’s only goal on 58 minutes too as his bursting run forward saw a cross delivered for ex-Hatters forward Charlie Walker to hook an excellent acrobatic volley into the net.

Banton, who headed to Clarence Park on loan until the end of the season last week, almost added a second himself, but lost his footing when bearing down on goal.

Striker Craig Mackail-Smith started for Peterborough as they won 1-0 at Gillingham in League One, replaced in stoppage time just moments after Junior Morais’ winner for the Posh.

Josh McQuoid began Stevenage’s 0-0 at Cambridge in League Two, although was substituted on 70 minutes for Ben Kennedy.

Keeper Craig King kept his first clean sheet as Southport won for the first time in 11 games, with a 1-0 triumph over Boreham Wood to move off the bottom of the National League thanks to Liam Nolan’s late strike.

Liam Gooch also enjoyed a shut out on his debut for Biggleswade Town in the Southern League Premier Division 3-0 win over Dorchester Town,

U18s striker James Verney made his debut for Dunstable Town as a 70th minute substitute in their 1-0 win at King’s Lynn in the same league, although Harry Bean missed out with illness.
