Speaking afterwards, Cuthbert said: “I’m marking my man, the wall’s there in line and ball’s gone over and it’s just gone in the net.

“I’ve not seen Matty’s position, so can’t really comment, but it’s a disappointing goal to lose when the ball goes into the middle of the net.

“But he’s a young lad, he’s done fantastic since he’s come in here. He’s had big shoes to fill in Christian Walton and he’s a big lump of a boy, a big, confident boy.

“We will support him, if he’s made a mistake then that’s what happens with young players and it’s about supporting him and about learning and not doing it again.”

Macey did redeem himself in the second period with a superb stop from sub Tom Owen-Evans, who looked odds on to make it 2-1 to the hosts, the 22-year-old brilliantly stretching out a right arm to divert his shot behind.

Cuthbert added: “That’s a great save, he’s as young keeper, he’s going to learn.

“I’m 29 myself and I still make mistakes and it’s still going to happen all through your career and it’s how you react.

“He’s a confident lad and will have all the lads round him and he’ll react fine. All the lads will be backing him all the way and he’ll be fine.”
