When Luton were awarded a spot kick against Exeter City on Saturday, Cameron McGeehan and Danny Green were involved in a heated discussion over who should take it.

McGeehan eventually won the argument and proceeded to slot home his ninth of the season as Awford, who had only taken over the previous Thursday, said: “If I’m honest, that’s my fault, I should have nominated a penalty taker before the game.

“That’s a detail that I missed, with all that’s gone one, that’s something that just got put under the carpet to be honest.

“So from now on I will nominate a penalty taker all the time that I’m in charge and that won’t happen again.”

When asked who it might be, Awford said: “I’ll keep that to myself.”

Captain Scott Cuthbert was quick on the scene to try and calm things down as speaking afterwards, he said: “You’ve see it happen before and I think Greeny is still not talking to Cam, still giving him the cold shoulder.

“But as long as Cam scores, we’ve had a few penalty takers this year, Cam’s a confident young lad and he said ‘I wanted it as I knew I was going to score it.’

“So fair enough, if he’d have missed it it would have been a different story!

“He’s fantastic though, he’s come from Norwich, is a young lad and still has a got to learn, but he’s showed real quality.”

Green did eventually get on the scoresheet himself with a measured volley from Sean Long’s cross as Cuthbert added: “We still couldn’t get a smile out of him!

“But I’m delighted for Danny as he’s been excellent since he came back into the team.

“We’ve got some real quality, and got some goalscorers as well, so we just need to start keeping some clean sheets.”
