Benson had gone 12 games without a goal this term, and hadn’t netted since March 25, during the 2-1 win at Grimsby.

Town’s frontman he said: “There’s a range of emotions, relief is one of them because, as a forward, if you’re playing, you want to be scoring goals.

“It’s all well and good working hard and doing all those little bits but they should be the minimum requirements of any player who plays.

“As a forward your job is to score goals and I don’t feel I’ve been contributing enough, helping not just Cully (Mark Cullen), but the whole team in scoring.

“So it’s nice to get one, but at the end of the day, it’s only one. I’ve still got a long way to go to match the targets that I set myself at the start of the season.”

Benson’s goal when it came, saw the striker react quickest to Mark Cullen’s fierce shot parried into the air by Exiles keeper Joe Day.

The forward did have one eye on the referee after Newport complained he had fouled Andrew Hughes in reaching the ball though.
