Benson urges Hatters to end ‘horrendous’ run

The Hatters have lost their last five matches on the road to make it one win since October 18 away from Kenilworth Road, a run of 14 games.

Benson said: “Our away form recently has been pretty horrendous so if we’re going to get it going we’ve got to start soon.

“We’ve actually got to start in the next game. Saturday is (all about) three points and trying to turn around this horrendous run of results. That’s all we can do now. We’ve got to try to win on Saturday and see where it puts us.”

With Town now no longer in the race for a top three spot, they could even find themselves falling out of the play-off places if results don’t go their way at the weekend, something Benson wants to make sure doesn’t happen.

He continued: “We’re talking about the play-offs now so we’ve got to win on Saturday to keep our play-off hopes alive.

“I’m obviously disappointed but I’ve played in the game long enough to realise that it can change. We’ve got eight games to go and the next game is a totally different game.

“f you thought you had a bad game (against Wycombe) then there’s a great chance to put it right on Saturday. That’s the way you’ve got to go about it.

“There’s no point sitting at home, feeling sorry for yourself. On Saturday we’re probably going to take a lot of fans down there.

“They deserve a performance from us on Saturday and I certainly will be one ready to put it in and hopefully turn it around for us.”

On just how to make sure Hatters do leave Sixfields with a victory, Benson thinks it can only happen if Town can sort out their recent defensive frailties.

He added: “If we went there and kept a clean sheet I think we’d do enough to get a goal and win the game.

“We’ve just got to be more organised. It’s easy saying (we need) a little bit of luck. I don’t think so. I think it’s a bit more than that.

“We need to be a little bit better defensively. To be fair, up until January/February time, I think we’ve been brilliant defensively.

“I really don’t know what’s happened in the last month or so because nothing has changed on the training ground.

“We work on organisation pretty much every day without fail, so I don’t really know what’s gone on defensively. We’re making stupid individual errors at crucial times.

“We’ve got to look at keeping clean sheets now. We’ve got to look at being a lot more organised and stronger at the back and look to be harder to score against.”
