Berry still has full belief that Luton can beat the drop

Luton midfielder Luke Berry is remaining confident that the Hatters can stay up despite declaring Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw with fellow strugglers Barnsley as a ‘missed opportunity’.

The Hatters had led for over an hour courtesy of Berry’s first goal of the season, before Tykes sub Aapo Halme levelled with six minutes to go, ensuring Luton remained bottom of the pile.

They are now five points from safety after the latest round of Championship results, with just four games to go, but Berry insists the great escape can happen, saying: “Definitely, we feel we can do it.

"It was a slight missed opportunity and we can’t be doing that for many more games, we need to be winning.

“It was frustrating with how we started, going 1-0 up and holding on for that long, then conceding a sloppy goal from a set-piece.

"I thought we defended crosses quite well considering how many there were, so it's very frustrating.

“We’ve got to be picking up wins if we want to be staying up, we’ll prepare ourselves properly and give it a right go.

“We feel like we can win three out of four and maybe four out of four if we can get our tails up and hold on.

"That’s why it’s a bit disappointing, we could have won and kicked on, but we’ll try and do that on Friday."

Luton travel to another side who are down there with them this evening, Huddersfield Town, the Terriers starting the day six points better off, and with a far superior goal difference.

A win would halve the deficit, although realistically, Town would still require four points to overtake their opponents, but Berry doesn’t think it’s quite win or bust situation just yet, saying “It depends on the results, but you’re looking at it and thinking we need to win.

“It’s not bust, but it’s a big, big win if we can get it.

"We’ve had one loss in eight, nine games, so we just need to turn those draws into wins.

"Our away form has been good, if we can pick up another win we can be looking up the table.”

The contest, live on Sky, will be Luton’s sixth in just 21 days since the season restarted due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Berry, who has only made two appearances after injury ruled him out of the first three fixtures, is raring to go, saying: “You can like a quick turnover when it’s a frustrating result like that (Barnsley).

“You want to get out there again and put it right, so in this case I think we’ll be fine and we’ll be flying.

“I had a little niggle in my calf and got 45 minutes the other day (against Reading), it was a disappointing result but good to be out there.

"I've trained maybe a week, week and a bit, but I felt good though.

"I kept my body in shape, so it wasn’t too much of a problem getting into training and I felt fine.”

Tonight will be Berry’s first taste of playing in front of an empty stadium on the road, with Town impressing so far, beating Swansea City and drawing with Leeds United.

After outings against Reading and Barnsley at Kenilworth Road, the former Cambridge man knows it's not an ideal scenario for the home side.

He added: “I do feel if we go 1-0 up, the fans are getting on us, they’re lively, we’re buzzing, it does help us and it doesn’t help the other team as they’re feeling a bit flat, while we're all buzzing.

"It definitely helps with the fans here, but we’ve got to deal with that at the moment and pick up a win.

"It feels a bit of a neutral ground when you go away, you can give it a right go.

"At this time of the season, we need to win, so we’ll be going out there to win the game.

“Away results have been good too, so hopefully we can keep that going.

"I feel like if we can get a goal early on, we can kick on and maybe get a few more.”
