Besta’s belter but Hatters edged out

Watford win battle of the reserves

CZECH midfielder Pavel Besta was on target but Luton Town were beaten 2-1 by rivals Watford in their reserve clash at Barton Rovers FC on Tuesday afternoon.

The summer signing scored with a fine effort from 25 yards, only for the Hornets to hit back in the second half as Gavin Bassey tapped home Will Buckley’s scuffed shot.

Hatters, who fielded a youthful side with only four players who have featured for the first team this season, were beaten in the last 10 minutes as Josh Walker scored.

Coach Jon Desouza said: “It was a good run out for a lot of the players. It was a very young side on a heavy pitch against a Championship side.

“They had players who have played at international level and have been bought for a lot of money so to run them close is a superb effort.

“Pav’s put us 1-0 up with a great finish from range but we’ve conceded two goals down the right flank.

“The second one was unlucky. Adam Watkins was off the pitch with the ball but Watford quickly found another one and played on and scored. To be fair to the referee he’s apologised to us at the end and admitted it shouldn’t have stood.”

Hatters: Lewis Kidd, Godfrey Poku, JJ O’Donnell, Pavel Besta, Alex Lacey, Newman Carney (Matt James), Taylor Nathaniel (Ryan Dasilva), Christian Tavernier, Jordan Patrick, Dan Walker, Adam Watkins. Subs not used: Mustafa Mirzai, Liam Toomey, Colby McAdams.

>> Town’s second string are due to host Ipswich Town reserves next at Sharpenhoe Road on December 7.
