Big changes planned for Trophy tie

VETERAN striker Kevin Gallen could be handed a recall to the Luton Town side for the first time in almost five months when the Hatters take on Uxbridge in the FA Trophy second round at Kenilworth Road on Saturday, writes Mike Simmonds.

The 35-year-old has returned to the club after his loan spell at League Two Barnet expired, where he netted one goal in nine appearances.

Manager Richard Money said: “Kevin Gallen will be involved. He’s back and actually picked up a knock in training this morning, so we’ll see how he is, but it is our intention to involve him.”

Young attacker Adam Watkins is also in line for his first team debut after completing a successful loan spell at Arlesey Town.

Money continued: “Adam Watkins is back, so he will feature.

“Arlesey were very pleased with him and he’s come back and trained with us in and there’s a real bright step about him.

“He’s missed out on an opportunity in the FA Cup because we allowed him to be cup-tied which was a mistake, so this is his opportunity.

“Given the fact that (Alex) Lawless can’t play Tuesday and (Amari) Morgan-Smith may or may not be fit, a good performance for him can certainly put him our thoughts for next week.”

The boss made 10 changes to his side for the Welling United clash in the first round, and after a hard-fought clash with AFC Wimbledon on Wednesday, and a home match with York City on Tuesday, he expects to do the same again.

After the goalless draw at Dons, Money had hinted his misfiring strikers may have the chance to regain some confidence in front of goal, but was quick to rule that out.

He said: “Danny Crow hasn’t scored for seven games.

“Strikers go though those types of spells, but Danny Crow won’t be involved.

“Adjaye (Ed Asafu-Adjaye) will need another game, while Alex Lacey, Godfrey Poku, JJ O’Donnell, Cauley Woodrow, Newman Carney and Jason Patrick will all feature too.

“The team that we select is one that we genuinely think can win and take us through to the next round.

“We do want to go further as we are serious about this competition.

“But given the heaviness of the pitch on Wednesday night and the proximity of the game along with another huge match next Tuesday, we’ll be very careful with most of our senior players.

“We’re not taking this competition lightly at all, but the way the matches have fallen in the calendar means that we do have bigger objectives.

“It doesn’t mean we won’t put out a team that we don’t think can’t win and certainly a team that we expect not to win.

“We want to carry on and want to go as far as we can.”

Although opponents Uxbridge are struggling in the Southern League Central Division, currently sitting fourth from bottom, averaging crowds of just 117, Money afforded them the respect of any side Hatters’ play, sending his scouts to the 3-3 draw at Atherstone United on Tuesday night.

He said: “We had someone at the game at Atherstone, so we’ve got the run down and the usual match report.

“They’ve got a bit of power up front as most teams at this level tend to have. They’ll be a handful at set-plays I’d suggest.”

Meanwhile there was mixed news regarding Town’s injury situation to Amari Morgan-Smith, Charlie Henry, Freddie Murray and Shane Blackett.

Money added: “I’d be surprised if he (Morgan-Smith) wasn’t fit for Tuesday, but he might not be, while I think both Murray and Blackett will be available come the end of the month.

“Charlie has had his operation and we won’t know until he has his follow up. The surgeon’s very happy with him, but in terms of timescale, I can’t tell you.”
