Brabin frustrated after Luton draw a blank

TOWN boss Gary Brabin defended his team selection after the 1-0 home defeat to league leaders Wrexham on Tuesday night, writes Mike Simmonds.

The majority of Hatters’ biggest crowd of the season, with over 7,000 in the stadium, left disappointed as their side failed to make any headway against the Red Dragons.

Brabin said: “I thought first half both sides cancelled each other out.

“We played 4-3-3 so we were always leaving players up. They played more of a 4-5-1 , they’re top of the league and have come out to frustrate us.

“It would be easy for me to hide behind excuses, we’ve lost Amari Morgan-Smith who’s been our central figure upfront.

“He’s going to be out for a couple of weeks. We’ve set out to be more attack minded, but they’ve come here, got people behind the ball, tried to frustrate us and it’s worked.

“It’s tough, especially when you’re playing against good sides like Wrexham. It’s hard to carve teams open.

“I said at half time it was going to be a mistake that was going to settle this game, and unfortunately it was our mistake and I was proved right.

“We had some chances, good chance right near the end, Shane (Blackett) has blasted it out for a throw.

“Jake’s had one as well, which he hit straight at the keeper and it’s unfortunate we haven’t even got a point out of it.”

Although Town were never at their best, Brabin’s changes were made fairly late on with Tommy Wright and John Paul Kissock both introduced with under 30 minutes remaining.

Brabin continued: “I just thought Tommy would give us a little bit more physical presence up there and thought we needed the ball to be held up a little bit more in the central area.

“JP we were always planning on using, but at the time, we’ve got attacking players, Azza (O’Connor) and Robbie (Willmott).

“Robbie I thought got more and more into the game second half and Azza looked our biggest threat in the first half.”
