Brabin keeps a lid on Hatters jubilation

LUTON Town manager Gary Brabin hailed his players after they gave themselves a huge chance of reaching the Blue Square Bet Premier play-off final at Eastlands by hammering Wrexham 3-0 at the Racecourse Ground on Thursday night, writes Mike Simmonds.

A stunning first half saw sublime goals from Alex Lawless, Claude Gnakpa and Ed Asafu-Adjaye see Town blitz their shell-shocked hosts, while Lawless and Zdenek Kroca could have increased their advantage in the second period.

Brabin said: “I’m delighted to get a win and it was a great start for the lads.

“I thought everyone to a man worked their socks off. I probably had a little bit of a dig at them after the game but I’m absolutely delighted and made up for them.”

Although Town should be home and hosed barring a miraculous Wrexham comeback, Brabin felt his side could have gone into the Kenilworth Road return leg on Tuesday night, already out of sight.

He continued: “To be honest, there’s probably parts of the game where I’m more disappointed that we didn’t score a few more goals.

“We took our foot off the pedal a bit and could have made even more of a scoreline of it.

“The second half I thought we could have played a little bit better, but overall it was a good start and we’ve just got to prepare properly now for the next leg.”

Lawless’ first goal was a tremendous strike from fully 30-yards while Gnakpa quickly followed it up, fairly leathering his effort into the top corner as Luton made a dream start to the tie, banishing any memories of their recent first leg efforts at Mansfield and York City.

Brabin said: “It was a great goal and he (Lawless) deserved it as well.

“At that point (2-0), it can be a little bit of a danger as people think it’s all over. People get it into their heads how long is left, but there is another game after this.

“I thought we defended fantastically well. We worked really hard and I thought we thoroughly deserved the win.”

Asafu-Adjaye’s goal was his first for the club and Brabin admitted the 22-year-old had really shone since the former Cambridge boss took over from Richard Money.

He said: “To be fair to Ed, he’s the one players who’s really come to my forethoughts with the way he’s performed since he’s come back from his loan at Histon.

“He’s done really well. His attitude in training has been fantastic and he’s deserved his chance.

“I thought he was excellent. He’s probably one of the players I’ve had a little bit of a dig at, but I thought he deserved his goal, deserved his place in the side, and I thought he was a credit.”

Brabin was also quick to praise the excellent Town supporters on the night too, as around 1,000 made the three hour trek to Wales, although the manager didn’t want anyone to get carried away just yet.

He added: “They’ve been absolutely fantastic and have played a real important part for us.

“I keep going on about the connection between the supporters and the players and it gives the lads a real lift.

“I don’t want to dampen the supporters spirit, but we haven’t done anything yet.

“We’ve got ourselves a little bit of a foot up into the next game, hopefully they’ll be another game after that.”
