Browne: Walker won’t have chance to lay penalty ghost to rest

DISTRAUGHT Jason Walker will never get the chance to put the ghost of his spot-kick failure at Eastlands to bed following his £60,000 move to Blue Square Bet Premier rivals York City, writes Mark Wood.

Town director Stephen Browne admitted he was ‘disappointed’ to see the diminutive striker leave, especially as he will not have the opportunity to redeem himself in a Luton shirt following last month’s play-off final penalty shoot-out defeat to AFC Wimbledon.

Browne said: “Personally I was disappointed. I know he was pretty distraught after Eastlands.

“It would have been nice to see him put that ghost to bed.

“But he said he would prefer to go back up north so hence the move.”

The 27-year-old had hit 11 goals in 18 games for Barrow before joining Town on loan, where he scored six times in 29 appearances.

Having paid about £45,000 for the striker in January, the transfer marks a small profit for Town, but there will be no further increments, with Brown saying: “There’s no spread payments or anything like that.”

While Browne liked Walker’s forthright attitude in front of goal, he is certain that manager Gary Brabin will be able to replace him.

He added: “Luck hadn’t quite been on his side when he got his chance, especially under Brabs.

“He was there or thereabouts. But he was exciting when he got the ball and was prepared to have a crack.

“As far as the team goes it’s one of those things and I’m sure Brabs will deal with it. I’m sure he has got his targets in mind.”
