Buckle hails new skipper

HATTERS: Town chief Paul Buckle hailed his new captain Ronnie Henry after Luton’s 1-0 friendly victory over League One Leyton Orient on Saturday.

Buckle confirmed he would wear the armband on Monday and said: “Ronnie Henry brings something to the football club.

“You see the way Ronnie is in training and you see the way he is in these games.

“He is bringing Janos (Kovacs) alongside him and all the other defenders. Teams are going to come and try stuff and bang balls into the box and you need that mentality, that horrible mentality to say no every time they come knocking.

“I’m happy with the way things are at the moment and it’s down to us next Saturday to make this a real tough place for everyone to come and play against us.”

He admitted there were a few glitches in Saturday’s final warm-up game and has demanded that all his players display their leadership qualities, starting with Saturday’s Blue Square Bet Premier opener against Gateshead.

Buckle added: “There were a couple of disappointments today. We got caught out with some short corners where we weren’t bright enough to go out and sort it out, but they’re things we’ve got to touch up on this week.

“I’m demanding that we have independent players and leaders on the pitch, and I need them to step forward.

“We need them to step forward and show they can do it.

“I’m confident they can and with this great crowd behind them, especially next Saturday, Gateshead will be in for a tough game.”
