The 43-year-old was in charge at Kenilworth Road from April 2012 to February 2013, leaving the club on the same day as a Conference fixture at Macclesfield for personal reasons, as he eventually moved to America with partner Rebecca Lowe.

Despite leading Luton to a place in the record books with an FA Cup win at Premier League Norwich City, Buckle couldn’t transfer that form into the league as Hatters failed to make even the play-offs.

On his appointment, Buckle told the Robins official website: “Things have moved very quickly. I had other offers in the States, when I made my mind up to go back into management, but after speaking to the chairman this job moved right to the top of the list.

“I knew in my gut that this was right. I feel I know the club in terms of bringing teams here and you get a feeling about the place.

“It’s always been a real family club and I loved the chairman’s enthusiasm.

“I like the fact Mark (Yates) was here for nearly five years speaks volumes about the club and it’s a very loyal club. It’s a club I am really looking forward to working with.”

Chairman Paul Baker added: “He went to Luton and did very, very well there.

“He got them into the play-offs and they had a tremendous cup run when they beat Wolves and beat Norwich.”

The ex-Torquay and Bristol Rovers chief will take charge of his first Robins match against Oxford United at home on Saturday, with Luton visiting Whaddon Road on Saturday, January 24.
