CONFIRMED: Hatters complete Marriott signing

The 20-year-old has penned an initial one-year contract with a view to a longer-term deal at Kenilworth Road, after being released by the Tractor Boys on Monday.

Raised in Northampton, Marriott was snapped up by the Ipswich academy as teenager, and after prolific spells for their youth team he signed professional forms, making his debut in the Championship during May 2013.

He has had loan spells with Woking, Carlisle and Gillingham in his time at Portman Road, before leaving earlier this week and Town boss John Still felt he had to act swiftly to bring him in.

The Luton chief said: “I think there will be other interest in him. We think he’s someone who has something and that’s why we’ve moved to get him as quick as we have.

“We’ve done quite a bit of work on this one over a period of time and he’s always one we kept our eye on closely.

“We were thinking about trying to loan him and he ended up at Gillingham, but when we thought he might become available, we’ve nipped in, spoken to him and got it agreed.

“We thought he was an ideal one for us and the fact I could convince him I’ve worked with Dwight (Gayle), Macca (Craig Mackail-Smith) and Benno (Paul Benson) worked in our favour.”

Although only 20 years of age, Still wasn’t worried about bringing another young talent into the club, as he continued: “Some people will say he is another young one, but I don’t worry about that as (Michael) Harriman’s a young one and (Cameron) McGeehan’s a young one.

“In terms of experience, (Luke) Wilkinson’s a young one, Pelly’s (Ruddock Mpanzu) a young one.

“He comes from Northampton, so if he wants to he can be back at home and I think Luton are a club he feels have opportunities to progress, so it all fitted together.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Marriott said: “I’ve had two good seasons out on loan and learned a lot but now I’m ready to settle at a club where I’ve got a good chance to contribute to the team.

“I like to run in behind and threatened defences, hassle them and don’t give them a minute’s peace, and I like to score goals – that is my main target. I pride myself on goalscoring.”
