Connolly: Hatters are streets ahead of previous winners

The summer recruit says he has no plans to hang around in the basement division after the club’s five-year exile in non-league football and feels that the winning momentum his new side will take from last term’s record-breaking campaign will steer them to more success.

The blueprint for double promotion has been laid out in previous seasons by Stevenage and Crawley who left the Conference as champions and then claimed a passage to League One at the first time of asking in 2011 and 2012 respectively.

But bullish Connolly, a Red Devils player last term, believes Luton are better placed to emulate those achievements.

He said: “I’ve watched Conference games – I used to watch Wrexham – and I’ve been to some games up north in League Two.

“There’s no difference, apart from the odd couple of part-time teams.

“You take heart from that because we’re miles bigger than Stevenage and Crawley, so if they can do it we can definitely do it.

“I feel if we played those two now we’d give both teams a good game and probably beat both of them anyway. I feel we’re better than them.”

Connolly insists no targets have been officially set for the Hatters but that there is only one thing fuelling him and his team-mates, promotion.
