Cuthbert remains a doubt for Cambridge trip

The summer signing from Leyton Orient has excelled in Town’s back-line so far this term, but went off during the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie against his former club after conceding a second half penalty.

Speaking to the press yesterday, boss John Still said: “As the fella was running to him, he’s gone to move his leg back which would have been his tackling leg, but he couldn’t move it.

“He had to come straight off and hasn’t trained today as it cramped up and he thought it had gone. We took him straight off, but he might be all right on Saturday.”

Still also has doubts over Paul Benson, Nathan Doyle and Dan Potts, although believes the rest of the squad are finally starting to reach their peak match fitness.

He continued: “Most people have trained today, one or two we probably wouldn’t push. Would we push Doyle? I don’t know. Would we push Potts? I don’t know. Would we push Benno? I don’t know. But I’ll look tomorrow as I can’t really say today.

“Ryan Hall, Josh McQuoid, Olly Lee are getting fitter and better, Magnus Okuonghae and Craig Mackail-Smith too, so gradually I think those players are finding their groove and that will only make the squad stronger

“Every time we train now we see Craig sharper, fitter, brighter, more alert and all those things will gradually come together.”

Still also faces a selection headache over who to play in goal as Elliot Justham did nothing wrong after being handed the gloves for Saturday’s 2-1 defeat against Portsmouth, while Mark Tyler also impressed in midweek.

He said: They’re both very good aren’t they. I can remember Elliot being disappointed when I brought Tyles in, and I can remember Tyles being disappointed when I brought Elliot in.

“I have to decide who I think should play and the greatest thing is, it’s not like I’m looking at two really poor goalkeepers thinking what one to play, I’m sitting there thinking it doesn’t matter if I get it wrong as it’s right.

“They’re both top goalkeepers. Some people say that’s a problem. If you’ve got two goalkeeper who can’t save it, that’s a problem.”

Meanwhile, Luton will be without Paddy McCourt (international duty), Cameron McGeehan (suspended) and Jack Marriott, who was sent off for gesticulating to the Leyton Orient supporters in midweek.

Although Still accepted Marriot shouldn’t have made the gesture, he felt the one match ban was harsh, adding: “He was in the middle of the pitch, the linesman was 30 yards away and he’s picked out a gesture he’s made to the crowd that he shouldn’t make.

“It it wrong? Absolutely it’s wrong. Is it what immature people do? Yes I think a lot of it is.

“I’ve got no problems with the linesman reporting it to the ref, but when I see some of the tackles and I see them in our games that have been punished by a yellow card and you get sent off for inciting the crowd.

“I don’t know who he incited, he shouldn’t have done it, but punishment fitting crime? Not for me.”
