Cuthbert would love to be named Luton captain

The position of skipper is up for grabs after Steve McNulty left the club for Tranmere Rovers earlier in the week.

Cuthbert has had the armband against Crawley Town and Leyton Orient, although manager John Still is yet to make his mind up who will lead the club going forward.

Speaking to the press after the 1-1 draw with Leyton Orient, Cuthbert said: “I’d love to be captain of the club, I love having that authority and that leadership.

“If the manager picks me he picks me, but I fully understand if he wants to go with someone else.

“I’m not selfish enough to think I fully deserve it, but while it’s mine I’ll just keep on doing my job, try and be a leader, try and be vocal on the pitch and off the pitch.

“It’s the manager’s decision. He’s got a whole lot of strong characters in that changing room he can pick, I’m really proud he’s picked me at the moment and it’s up to me just to keep on trying to do as well as I can.”

On the departure of McNulty, Cuthbert continued: “Since I came to the club Macca was brilliant. He was a good captain, larger than life character, really loud in the dressing room and all the boys looked up to him.

“At the end of the day family comes first, he’s looking out for his family and good luck to him up at Tranmere.”

Meanwhile, assistant boss Terry Harris reiterated a decision had yet to be made on where the armband will end up, as he said: “Nothing’s been decided on that at the moment, but Scott’s there.

“Magnus (Okuonghae) has gone out now for a month to get games, we thought he needs to go out and get a run of games, he played Saturday and played this evening.

“Then he’ll come back all guns blazing and then that’s another situation we’ll have.”

Although McNulty had been a huge part of Town’s back-line, Cuthbert felt there was enough within the squad to cope with his absence.

He said: “I think the gaffer touched on it a couple of days ago, it’s a chance for other players to step up now.

“We’ve got good characters in that changing room. Just because one leaves, there’s a chance for other players to step up and be counted for and I’m sure they will.”

The move does mean that Cuthbert is now back in his preferred position in the heart of Town’s defence after a spell at right back.

He does appreciate improvements are needed in his own game though, especially with Okuonghae’s loan spell at Hartlepool.

Cuthbert added: “I want to be a centre back and didn’t do myself justice on Saturday, I didn’t play well at all, I was really disappointed with myself.

“I felt I performed a bit better today, me and Wilko (Luke Wilkinson) just need to get that partnership going as Mags is only on loan for a month to get fit.

“He’s going to come back firing on all cylinders, while Mark O’Brien is sitting on the bench ready to come in.

“We’ve got be on our toes and start keeping clean sheets otherwise we’ll find ourselves on the bench.”
