The summer signing said: “After missing the penalty it was a big relief. There has been a lot of frustration and I think everybody could see the delight and there was a lot of emotion in it.

“The lads came over and said you deserved it. It will kick-start my season.

“It meant a lot. It’s been a long time coming. For the fans to show their appreciation and chant your name is something I’ve worked for and I’m thoroughly happy. I could have had more goals, I’m just happy to put in a performance for the fans.”

Crow admitted he should have been on penalty duties before Claude Gnakpa inisted on taking the first spot kick. He said: “We didn’t assign it before the game but the gaffer said beforehand he wanted me to take it to get some confidence but unfortunately it went the other way.

“When Claude was taking the penalty everyone was shouting for me to take it. Claude seemed pretty confident he wanted to.

“He missed and I stood up and I missed as well and it could have affected my confidence but what with how I was playing, I felt confident and luckily I got another chance and it went in.

“I was delighted and thankfully we got three points. All in all I’m just happy I scored and it’s been a long time coming.”

Crow also confirmed that being out of the team had been a test of his character, saying: “When people ask you how many you’ve scored and you say zero it’s a bit demoralising.

“I try to be happy and join in. I’ve been knocking on the gaffer’s door because I want to get in the team. The formation we are playing the gaffer said get the ball to me and when I get it I’ve got to do something with it.

“He said I’ve been waiting for this chance and now I’ve got to take it. All I want to do is play football like everyone else.

“Hopefully now the team kicks on. If I manage to get some goals now and then I will be pleased.”

On the game and the big bust-up before half time, he added: “I think there were a lot of emotions.

“They didn’t think the penalty should be retaken and we missed two penalties. Both clubs wanted to win and it shows how much it meant to both teams.

“Mansfield are a good team and I thought we thoroughly deserved to win the game and to get three points is a big result for us.”
