The defender, who was at Wycombe Wanderers, has been out of action since sustaining a serious knee problem in a pre-season friendly at Barnet.

Doherty started his career at Kenilworth Road, where he played in attack and defence, scoring 15 goals in 83 appearances, before moving to Spurs for £1million in 2000.

He went on to have spells at Norwich, Charlton and Wycombe, playing over 500 times at every level of the English game, and also won 34 caps for the Republic of Ireland.

On his decision, Doherty told the Wycombe official website: “It’s the hardest decision for any footballer to have to make.

“You always hope you’ll be able to retire in your own time when it’s right for you, but injury has forced my hand and it’s one of those things you have to deal with.”
