Luton Town will get their 2021/22 season underway on the weekend of August 7 after the EFL confirmed the start dates for the new campaign this afternoon.

With the Hatters finishing their current term on Saturday, May 8, it will give Nathan Jones' side nearly three months before the serious action gets underway again, almost six weeks more preparation time than they had last year.

With fans expected back in stadiums by then due to coronavirus restrictions hopefully ending, the season will conclude on the weekend of May 7/8, 2022, as a statement on the EFL website said: "The EFL can confirm the key dates across the League and its competitions for the 2021/22 campaign, with the season set to get under way across the Sky Bet Championship, League One and League Two on the weekend of 7 August 2021.

"The Sky Bet EFL Play-Offs will once again be staged at Wembley Stadium and conclude the season across two weekends in May.

"The League One Final will start proceedings on Saturday 21 May 2022, before League Two and the Championship take centre stage the following weekend on Saturday 28 May and Sunday 29 May 2022, respectively."

Luton will face a Carabao Cup first round tie on the week commencing August 9, with the final to take place on Sunday, February 27.
