Former Town defender Chris Coyne is hopeful he might get the opportunity to watch another member of the Coyne family pull on a Luton shirt and run out for the Hatters one day in the future.

The now 41-year-old who made 252 appearances for Town between 2001 and 2008, scoring 16 goals, is currently living back in his home country of Australia after retiring from playing almost a decade ago.

However, with two of his sons looking they like could have a chance of following their dad into the full-time game, which saw him also play for West Ham and Colchester either side of his stint with Luton, winning seven international caps along the way, then Coyne's affiliation with the Hatters could continue.

Speaking to the Luton News, he said: “My oldest boy is turning 19 this year, my middle one was actually trialling at Luton in September and he’s got a chance of being a footballer, as does the youngest one, he looks like he might be a decent goalkeeper.

“Once the kids are old enough, it’s up to me and my wife to say ‘let's go back to Europe,’ because we didn’t want to leave.

“She loved it in Europe, so once the kids are a bit older, that’s definitely something I’m going to try and tick off and go back.

“I hope so (his son could play for Luton), it was good seeing him in that strip when Adrian Forbes had them down there.

“I tell you, I had a bit of a lump in my throat watching him run out, so touch wood maybe, well he won’t get the chance to play on the Kennel, but Power Court hopefully.

"When they get up and running at the new stadium, they will fill it out, they will get bums on seats definitely."

Coyne went to Perth Glory and even had a spell with Chinese Super League club Liaoning Whowin after leaving Luton is currently head coach with National Premier Leagues Western Australia side Bayswater City SC.

He continued: “I’ve been coaching for about seven, eight years now and I really enjoy it.

"It's a great group of boys, it’s semi pro level, and they’re a good outfit, they’re professional, they do things properly.

"Moving away from Europe, it was time for me to just spend time with my family, let them develop and do what they want.”

Despite being all those miles away from Luton, it doesn't stop Coyne from staying abreast of the news at Kenilworth Road, a stadium he gets back to whenever possible as well.

He added: "Absolutely, we’re fortunate now, the world’s a small place, and I keep in touch with Gary Sweet, while with social media I’ve been able to keep up to date.

"I watch them when they’re on TV and I was over, I watched them against Hull and then came down on the Tuesday and watched them against Leicester in the Carabao Cup back in September.

"The first thing I did, was I got on the phone to Gary Sweet and said 'can I come and watch a game?'

"So I still love the club, it’s the first result I check for every weekend, and I'm very proud to have been able to put the shirt on and represent the club."
