The maligned 29-year-old striker was an interested onlooker at Kenilworth Road on Saturday as Town triumphed 4-2 against the Heed.

Tynesiders boss Gary Mills managed Walker while at York City where he scored 27 goals in 81 games after joining for £60,000 from Luton in June 2011.

On Walker, who is a free agent after leaving Swedish second division club Ostersunds FK last month and is currently training with Gateshead, Mills said: “He scores goals, holds the ball up well and has a great leap for a small bloke.

“Jason’s getting his sharpness back as he’s had a few weeks off. I’d like to sign him when the transfer window opens.”

Town signed Walker from Barrow and scored six times in 29 appearances, but infamously saw his tamely chipped penalty down the centre of the goal saved as Luton lost their 2011 play-off final to AFC Wimbledon on penalties.
