Ex-Hatters boss appointed as new head of football by Clarets

Still takes a new role with Chelmsford City

Former Luton Town manager John Still has been appointed as the head of football at National League South side Chelmsford City.

The 75-year-old took charge at Kenilworth Road back in February 2013, leaving Dagenham & Redbridge to lead the Hatters out of the Blue Square Bet Premier by winning the title, as he left with the club in League Two in December 2015. He returned to manage the Daggers, before having spells in charge of Barnet and Maidstone United, then becoming head of football at Southend United in November 2021, leaving his role with the Shrimpers as part of a restructure earlier this month.

However, he will now head to a Clarets side who are 10th in the table, and have Luton youngster Jamie Odegah on loan, as chairman Spencer Gore said in a club statement: “Today marks a significant milestone in the journey of Chelmsford City Football Club. I am absolutely delighted to announce the appointment of John Still as our new Head of Football.

“John is a name that commands enormous respect across the game. With decades of experience, multiple promotions, and a proven track record of building successful teams, his appointment represents a major step forward for this football club. This is not just a hire — it is a statement of intent. As we continue to build a club that is ready to compete at the next level, strengthening our recruitment structure is critical.

"The difference between good teams and great teams often comes down to the quality, consistency, and strategy behind recruitment. John brings all of that in abundance. His knowledge of the non-league and Football League pyramid is second to none. More importantly, he understands what winning looks like — and how to build it. This appointment reflects where we are heading. We are building a football club with real ambition, real structure, and real belief.

"A club that is not just thinking about the next game, but the next level. John will play a key role in shaping the future of our squad, identifying talent, and helping us create a team capable of delivering sustained success. For our players, staff, and supporters — this is another clear signal that we are serious about our journey. We are not here to stand still. We are here to build. And today, we have taken another big step forward.”

Still himself added about his new role: "I'm really pleased to be joining Chelmsford City, I have had some really good conversations with Spencer recently and it's a really exciting project to be part of. I feel I have a good bit of knowledge that I can bring to the club so we can start working towards what we want to achieve and help out in every way I can. I am looking forward to getting to work as soon as possible, working alongside Spencer and a new manager to take this club where we want to be.”
