Ex-Luton winger is released by Bolton Wanderers following promotion

Mendes Gomes not offered a contract by the Trotters

Former Luton winger Carlos Mendes Gomes is now a free agent after being released by Bolton Wanderers recently.

The 27-year-old moved to Town from Morecambe in June 2021, as he played 15 games, scoring twice, but was loaned to Fleetwood Town during the following campaign, where he made 37 appearances, also adding nine goals. Mendes Gomes then left Kenilworth Road to sign for the Trotters in July 2023, as the Guinea-Bissau international featured 23 times in his first season, on target four times.

The following year he played 12 times for Wanderers, while last term, he made just two outings at the start of the season, before heading to fellow League One side Exeter City on loan in September, playing 22 games for the Grecians, scoring once, but was unable to help keep the club in the third tier, as they were relegated on the final day.

With Bolton winning the play-offs by beating Stockport County 4-1 at Wembley to reach the Championship, the club released four players, including Mendes Gomes, as writing on Instagram, speaking about his time at St James Park, he said: “Not the end of the season that we all wanted but I would like to thank first and foremost the fans who supported us all the way, the staff and players for making me feel wanted and God. I wish the club the very best and I am sure they will bounce back soon.”
