Farnborough boss thrilled to capture 'highly-rated' Luton keeper

Thomas earns move to Saunders Transport Community Stadium

Farnborough boss Spencer Day was overjoyed with the signing of ‘fantastic’ young Luton keeper Lucas Thomas on a half-season long loan deal for the National League South club.

The Bedford-born 18-year-old is extremely highly thought of at Kenilworth Road, having come through the club’s Community Trust's Player Development Centre in Kempston at the age of seven, before joining the Hatters Academy as an U10 and going on to sign his first professional contract in May of last year.

Thomas helped the Hatters’ youth team to a league and cup double during the 2024-25 campaign, while he has been included in Town’s first team matchday squad on numerous occasions since, named on the bench for the League One trip to Exeter City on New Year’s Day, plus the Vertu Trophy matches against Brighton & Hove Albion U21s and Swindon Town , while still playing regularly for the U18s and U21s.

The teenager ended last term with his first senior experience, on loan at Gosport Borough, as he earned some rave reviews from his time with the Southern League Premier Division South side, keeping three clean sheets. Having started Farnborough’s 2-1 friendly defeat at home to League One Reading last week, then having been allocated shirt number one for the campaign ahead, boss Day told the Boro official website: “Many thanks to Luton.

"He’s a fantastic goalkeeper. I believe he’s third choice. He’s very, very highly rated. I’ve done a lot of homework on him. We’ve got a great relationship with Luton, with Alex (Lawless, U21s lead coach and loans manager) and their management for letting us have him as a free loan until January.

"He’s very highly recommended. He’s young, but he’s a cheeky chap. He’s had a great loan at Step Three. We spoke to them and so many people said ‘if you can get him, grab him’. He’s come in here and you can expect him to be a little nervous but he didn’t show it. It’s another tick in the box and we’re very grateful to everyone involved. I’m sure he’ll do very, very well for us.”

A statement on Farnborough’s official website said: “The 18-year-old shot-stopper arrives at the Saunders Transport Community Stadium with a glowing reputation and a hunger for first team football, providing his young talents to the Boro backline. Thomas is widely regarded as one of the brightest defensive prospects in Luton Town’s academy set-up.”
