The 22-year-old played in Town’s 3-1 Beds Premier Cup win over Biggleswade Town on Monday, his third full game of pre-season.

After missing the whole of last year through injury, Fitzsimons is now desperate to finally make his first competitive appearace for Town.

He said: “That’s been the goal for a long time, make my debut in the Football League, hopefully this season.

“I need to try and force my way in. The competition in defence makes everything healthy, but the team will pick itself. The best player will play and whoever doesn’t play will strive to. Me personally, I’m going to be striving to play.”

With more time on the pitch, the ex-Histon defender is finally starting to mentally get over his injury too and earned praise from Town first team coach Hakan Hayrettin who said: “I thought he did well. He’s been out a long, long time, he now has to mentally push through that pain barrier, because when you’ve had an injury like that, thoughts and ideas are in your mind, so that was very encouraging for him.”

That was a view echoed by Fitzsimons, who is also expecting Hatters to enjoy a fruitful season in League Two this term.
