Fleetwood ‘buzzing’ as three amigos claim win

Buzzing Stuart Fleetwood was delighted that the three amigos were able to the business for the Hatters on Tuesday night, writes Mark Wood.

Substitutes Fleetwood, Yaser Kasim and Jake Robinson were all introduced to real effect as Town triumphed 2-1 at Tamworth after going a goal down midway through the first half.

Fleetwood, who set up Kasim’s equaliser before scoring the winner said: “It was important because the game was going away from us and the gaffer’s put on a couple of substitutions.

“The boys that came on were ready, like he (Paul Buckle) asked us to be and we did the job and turned it round.

“I got Yas involved for his first goal so I was buzzing for him and managed to nick the winner as well.

“It was fresh impetus when we did come on, the game changed almost straight away.

“Like I said it was important we were all ready on the bench, it’s what they always ask of us and we did that, we were bright.”

It was Fleetwood’s eighth goal of the season and he was delighted it had helped the Hatters claim a hard-fought win.

“I’ve been in the right place at the right time and luckily they’re going in for me, so I will keep plugging away,” said Fleetwood.

“I said so at the start of the season that I couldn’t care less who scores the goal so long as we get promoted, that’s my only aim. If it’s me who scores the goals so be it.

“It’s a fantastic result when we look back because not a lot of teams will win here this season.

“With the conditions, the pitch was good, obviously the weather was difficult to play in, but we just showed great character to turn it around, especially on the back of a couple of disappointing results.

“We’ve had a little bit of stick recently, but that is the character of our team at the moment.”

Although he was disappointed to start on the bench, the forward was pleased with the way they turned it around.

Fleetwood said: “It’s always disappointing to start on the bench. As any player you want to start every game, but I’m not a sulker.

“I’m not going to get my head down and have a moan up about it. I was ready when I came on and did what I’m paid to do.

“It’s difficult because there’s different sorts of players on the bench.

“With (Jon) Shaw and Rens (Scott Rendell) up front, they’re two big target men and they get the ball down.

“They work off crosses mainly and we didn’t get enough crosses into them first half.

“So the second half when we come on with a little bit of pace, the game opened up, which it’s bound to.

“It’s a different option, it makes the defenders think and they were tired at the end and we managed to get in behind them a little bit.

“There’s a lot more space, no disrespect to the defenders in this league but they are usually big lads who want to head the ball and not the quickest on the floor.

“So that’s my game to get in behind and play that central role and try and feed off the shoulder and work off through balls.”

Buckle was confident it had been the right decision to leave Fleetwood out initially but believed he came into his own as the game became stretched.

He added: “Sometimes you need to come out. Stuart accepted it, he understood the plan.

“When you bring Fleets on like that, and the game is opened up and stretched he’s a real threat.

“He’s not such a threat when it’s congested and there’s a bit of a fight.

“I don’t think Tamworth were quite ready for that.

“Yas scoring the goal gave us confidence. The more they pushed forward, even at 1-1 and 2-1, I was confident as long as we could remain solid at the back, which we did, we would break on them.

“We had three golden opportunities but credit to Tamworth they’ve defended for their lives as well, and this is what you are seeing with every team that plays Luton,

“I’m sure the supporters are sick of hearing it, but it’s a fact that we’ve got to be up for every game, we’ve got to be ready.

“We’ve got to get out of the traps Saturday.”
