Former Luton defender Alan Sheehan has signed for League One Northampton Town on an appearance based contract.

The 34-year-old made 135 appearances for the Hatters, scoring nine times, and was selected in the 2017-18 EFL and PFA League Two teams of the season, also winning two of the Town supporters’ player of the year awards during his four years at Kenilworth Road.

On leaving in January of this year, Sheehan went to Lincoln City, playing just once before the season was ended by the coronavirus pandemic.

He has now been snapped up by the Cobblers, and made his debut in their 4-0 defeat at Portsmouth last night, as Northampton boss Keith Curle said: “He is an influential figure, a leader, an excellent character, he understands his craft of defending and is a very good player.

“He has very high standards, he is a good organiser and an excellent example to other players around him. We have signed a top professional, an organiser and someone who I feel will be of benefit to us.

“I managed him eight or nine years ago when he was at Notts County and he has an excellent football brain. He can play and he can defend and he spots danger.

“Having an old head out there who has been there and done it to push people around and organise things out on the field can only be a good thing.

"He has been training here for the last few weeks - he is a very good professional who has already fitted in very well in the dressing room.

"If someone is not doing what they need to be doing when they need to be doing it, he is not shy of telling them in the right way and that is just what we need."
