Fuccillo confident Hatters made the right appointment

AFTER being part of the interview panel that appointed Town’s new manager, on meeting Paul Buckle, technical director Lil Fuccillo was left in no doubt there was only one man for the job, writes Mike Simmonds.

Speaking when the former Torquay and Bristol Rovers boss was unveiled to the media last Sunday morning, Fuccillo said: “I think the way Paul spoke, the way he wanted to do things, how vibrant he is and the enthusiasm he can bring to the club with the way he wants to portray it, was a bit factor.

“We sat there listening to him for a good 10-15 minutes and he had us in his hands. When you look at the candidates we did speak to, he came out on top.

“We appointed him in the manner in which he’s going to take the club forward.”

Fuccillo has only been recently brought into the club himself and when asked how his role would work alongside Buckle, he added: “I’m there to assist him, not there to tell him what to do, how to do it.

“He’s his own man, he’s the one who will pick the team. He might ask for my opinion, I’ll give him my opinion.

“We’re there to help from recruitment right through to the playing staff. Everything we do at this club has to be in a forward manner and having the combination between the three of us.

“We’ll be on the road as well, watching matches and making sure the calibre of players we’re bringing into the club is right.

“Not being disrespectful to previous people, but you could say the team is unbalanced or not got this, not got that.

“Everyone has an opinion on players, but he’s (Buckle) got to find out very quickly, who he wants to be the starting 11 as games are coming thick and fast.

“One thing we can’t have is the way we performed against Braintree.

“We’re going to fight hard, from manager right through and the players will perform for him because he’s going to demand that.”
