Gnakpa and Showunmi the star turns in Mark Ovendale Memorial Trophy

The game, which is held for SoLYD and Macmillan Cancer UK in honour of the former Luton goalkeeper who died in 2011, raised over £2,000 on the day, with more expected from auctions of memorabilia.

At the beginning of the game, there was a two minutes silence in memory of Ovendale, Luton Town fan Tom Close and Macmillan FC player Adrian Peck.

The match ended 5-5 at full time and Macmillan went on to win 7-5 in extra time having been awarded four penalties.

Star performances from ex-Luton players Enoch Showunmi and Claude Gnakpa could not save Hatters Talk as they lost the trophy.

After the match, there were player presentations and a balloon release, while members of Ovendale’s family were presented with a framed goalkeeper shirt that belonged to Mark and was signed by him.

Full back Michael Harriman also attended the day and presented the players with their awards.

Both managers, Tina Morris for Hatters Talk FC and Justin Cross for Macmillan AFC, deserve huge thanks for their efforts, as do all the volunteers.
