Manchester United attacker Juan Mata was satisfied with his side's 'professional' display as they ran out 3-0 winners in their Carabao Cup third round tie against Luton at Kenilworth Road last night.

The Spanish international got the ball rolling just before half time, converting a penalty after George Moncur had tripped Brandon Williams.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side didn't have it all their own way in Bedfordshire though, as centre half Tom Lockyer almost equalised for Town inside the final 10 minutes, seeing his header from Andrew Shinnie's free kick excellently saved by debutant Dean Henderson.

The Red Devils by this point had thrown on Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood and Bruno Fernandes though, with Rashford and Greenwood showing their class late on, scoring two late goals to put the tie to bed.,

Mata told Sky Sports said: "It’s one of those games where, if you win you’ve done what you had to do, and if you lose it’s a mess.

“We did a professional job today, we didn’t concede a goal and scored three.

"At times, we played some good football, it’s job done tonight; it was important to win after our first game in the Premier League, which we know wasn’t good enough."

When asked about Henderson's vital stop, Mata added: "It was very important because it was 1-0 at that moment.

"He did a great save and someone else saved the ball on the line and I think we did fine, we attacked and defended goals.

“To be honest, we have not been training together for too long after a difficult pre-season.

"Now it’s important to get the rhythm back, to get the confidence and, of course, the confidence comes with results.”
