Gray amazed at how the tables have turned for Town’s attackers

The striker showed great strength and composure to put Luton ahead, but Hyde proceeded to boss the majority of the first half and netted a late equaliser courtesy of Steve McNulty’s own goal on the stroke of half time.

Gray said: “I thought we played well the first five minutes and then after we scored we took our foot off the gas and obviously they got the equaliser from an own goal, but we’ve come out second half and dominated the game and got the three points we needed.”

The game was another prime example of how Town’s strikeforce now seem to have hit their straps, while their previously watertight defence is struggling with the expectation of clean sheets.

Luton had kept eight clean sheets in their first 12 games, but have now conceded seven in their last three.

While in front of goal they only managed five in their first eight games, and have now scored 21 goals in seven outings.

Gray continued: “I think it’s quite funny how the tables have turned where we wasn’t conceding and we never looked like we were going to concede and we didn’t look like we were ever going to score.

“To now that we just look like we’re going to score all the time. But obviously the defence have been fantastic for us and they still have been and everyone goes under that little bit of pressure where the little things ain’t going.

“But as long as we are winning it will build everybody’s confidence. (Alex) Lacey’s still young, he’s only 20 and got a great career ahead of him and Macca’s been fantastic for us, so it’s nothing to worry about and I think we’re in a great stead to go and win it.”

Gray admitted that Hyde produced some good football at the weekend, but probably attempted to overplay at times.

He said: “They try to play the right way, they try to play it out from the back.

“Maybe they haven’t got the players to do it, no disrespect to them.

“But it was a matter of us and as long as we were on our day today, obviously the table doesn’t lie.

“It was just a matter of us not worrying about them and getting our passing and our shape right and it worked.”

But Gray was in no doubt that Town would turn it around in the second half, as long as they played to their potential.

He added: “I think it was a matter of how we play, not how they were. I don’t think it was them causing us problems in that sense, it was just us being sloppy at times and not giving the ball away cheaply.

“We knew we just had to go out there the second half and just keep moving the ball and the way they played we knew we’d always get in.”
