Green knows there are no assurances over starting role

The 27-year-old was back in the starting line-up for the first time for a league game since September 12 against Barnet at the weekend.

However, despite scoring a cracking opener, after seeing Luke Guttridge dropped to the bench, he knows no-one is secure on Saturday.

Green said: “Games change every week, we’ve got a tough game against Stevenage, so hopefully any boys who get put out there will do well.

“I think Gutts was unlucky to miss out against Barnet as he’s been brilliant the last couple of games.

“It’s a squad game and if you’re not picked this week, you’ll probably be picked next week.

“If you deserve to play, you deserve to play, but sometimes it’s not about that, sometimes you’re just not the right man for the job on that day and you’ve got to realise that.”

Striker Paul Benson, another who was also philosophical about his chances of playing too after recovering from a neck injury to start last weekend.

He said: “I’m at that age now where I realise sometimes for the benefit of the team you maybe have to sit out a game or two while other players get their chance who have been doing well in training.

“It’s very hard to play week in week out. When I was younger, I wanted to be involved in every game.

“When you get a bit older, maybe for the benefit of the team, it’s sometimes better if it’s switched around.

“Like with Gutts, the way he’s been playing recently, he would have no hesitation in being put in the team.

“I think gaffer just wants to look after him a little bit as he’s had injuries previously.

“Maybe when you’re a bit older, you take it on the chin a bit better than when you’re younger.

“So it’s down to the senior players to just pick everyone up when they’re not playing and let them know they’ve got a massive part to play when they are in the team.

“We’ve got to have a big squad if you’re going to do well in this divison. There’s loads of games, especially at Christams time when they come thick and fast.

“You want to have a good pool of players to call uon when you need them, and we’ve certainly got that.”

Green was also more than aware that boss John Still has plenty of options to choose from with the impressive squad in place at Kenilworth Road. He added: “No-one else has got a really big enough squad like we have.

“Usually in League Two you rely on your first 11 and that’s it, where we’ve probably got two 11s.

“When we do 11 v 11 in training, you just don’t know who’s going to win as there’s always good players on each team.

“As the season goes on that might be one of our strengths.”
