Green likens McGeehan to England star Dele Alli

Green was in the same MK Dons side as the country’s latest hot prospect Alli last season in which they won promotion to the Championship.

Alli bagged 16 goals in 44 appearances, earning a £5m move to Premier League giants Spurs, where he has gone on to win three England caps so far this season.

When asked if he felt he could see similarities in Hatters star McGeehan, Green said: “The goalscoring is very similar, he pops up in the right places at the right time and technically he is very good as well.

“I enjoy playing with Cam, in training we play well together. Dele had everything, like he’s shown now, he was playing against Spain (on Friday), so Cameron can go as high as he wants.

“He’s got that determination, he’s a fit lad as well, and he’s got a good brain on him so he can go as high he wants.”

Green felt that some extra time on the training ground was also paying off for McGeehan as he continued: “That’s eight goals now for him, for a young kid like that to score as many as that is really good.

“He stays after, with myself and we do extra free kicks and shooting, so he’s getting his rewards this season.

“He had to do a bit of a job on the left and it freed me up a bit in the first half. If I went forward he would tuck in and make it hard for them, so he did a job and deservedly got his goal.”

McGeehan’s goal during the 2-0 win over Barnet at the weekend was his eighth of the season for Luton, moving him clear in the race to be top scorer.

It earned him further plaudits too as striker Paul Benson said: “Cam’s been chipping in with goals all through the season and it was no different.

“He just pops up in the right areas and has got that uncanny knack of being in the right place at the right time.

“He’s just this season, probably more so I’ve noticed, made some intelligent runs into the box, holding out and expecting, guessing where the ball is going to go and arriving on time.

“Lot of his goals have come that way and it’s a fantastic trait to have, especially as a centre forward, but more so as a midfielder.

“They get noticed a lot more, those midfielders who can time their runs. It’s Frank Lampard-esque to finish it off and he’s done that brilliantly this season.”

McGeehan was playing wide on the left against the Bees as manager John Still thinks it’s a position he can flourish in.

He said: “What we work with is coming off the line on to his right foot which is where he got his goal from.

“He’s not one of those people whether he plays on the right or left who is going to run down the wing and cross it, he’s not that sort of player.

“He drifts inside and picks balls up off of front people, and I think that coming in on his right foot is where he can get quite a few goals for us.”

On his goal tally so far this term, Still added: “One in two, it’s terrific, it really is, and he’s missed a couple (of games) to give him a rest.

“With the young ones, I think it’s important that they don’t get ahead of themselves, they sit back and have a good rest, watch, learn when they watch.

“It’s worked out well for us and has worked out well for Cam.”
