Guttridge: We must build on Cambridge victory

Luton head to Notts County on this afternoon, with the Magpies tipped by many to push for promotion this term.

But Guttridge is confident Town can start moving up the table themselves now after a 3-1 victory at the Abbey Stadium.

He said: “It’s been what we’ve needed this season, something to kick start us.

“I thought we did that Tuesday (against Leyton Orent in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy) and the performances maybe have been better than where the league position puts us.

“It’s important to get the first league win. We’re starting to get back into the groove and hopefully that’s the platform for us to kick on.”

“It’s still so early in the season and if you win two or three games, the whole complex of the league change, so that’s what we’re looking to do, get a couple of wins.

“We’re not getting carried away, we don’t think we’re Real Madrid or Barcelona, but it’s another step in the right direction and hopefully we can go to Notts County and get a positive result.”

The midfielder, who has found himself on the sidelines for large parts of the season so far, thinks once manager John Still finds his preferred formula, the side can only benefit.

He continued: “I do believe we are a work in progress and think we will get better once we get a more settled team and formation.

“How we’re playing at the moment suits the team and the squad of players, it has done ever since I’ve been here, that’s me personally.

“If you speak to someone else it might be different, but I think we need to stick to a format and then start building round that.”

Guttridge himself was back in the starting line-up for the first time in the league this season at the Abbey, and admitted missing out has been tough for him and a lot of Luton’s players this term.

He added: “We’ve got a strong squad and that’s what we didn’t have last year.

“When people did come in, they probably didn’t step up to the plate as the people who were missing and that probably cost us in the end.

“Players like Danny Green have found it frustrating, but it’s a big squad and you are going to be frustrated.

“All you can do is play well and give the manager decisions to make, so I’m delighted as it has been a tricky start for a lot of people.

“Plenty of them would have liked to have played a lot more, Josh McQuoid would have, but he’s been patient, come in, done an important role, played in a position that’s not necessarily for him.

“It’s the same as Steve O’Donnell, Scott Griffiths, both keepers have played well.

“Whoever’s come in have done well so I’m happy for the people who are getting chances who have had to wait and also for the lads that have been given the opportunity from the start, they’ve done well as well.”
