Harris admits red card is a harsh lesson for Marriott

The 20-year-old received his marching orders from referee Nicholas Kinseley with 10 minutes remaining when match officials spotted him gesticulating to the away fans after putting a free header wide.

He will now miss this weekend’s League Two trip to Cambridge United as Harris said: “It was a gesture to the away fans. Unfortunately you can’t get away with that. In an ideal world, the linesman just pulls us and says this is what’s happening and we can talk to him and advise him accordingly.

“But nowadays you can’t incite the crowd and we’ll just have to take that one on the chin.

“We’ll leave him alone and speak to him on Thursday. He won’t do it again will he?

“I think it’s only one game, an important game on Saturday and we’ll be without Jack. It’s an unfortunate thing to happen, but hopefully he’ll learn from that.”

Full back Stephen O’Donnell, who netted the late winner, was also of the opinion that Marriott will have to chalk his actions down to experience, as he said: “I think he might have given a wee bit of grief back to the away fans which if it’s done in the right spirit, I think it can be banter because fans like to give banter.

“But these days you’re not allowed to give any of it. He shouldn’t have done what he did, he’s young, he’s got a lot of potential as was seen by his new deal, which was great to get him tied down because he’s got a lot of promise.

“Younger players will make these lapses of judgements and it’s just about learning from it and making sure these things don’t happen again.

“Thankfully it didn’t cost us. It’s good we recovered from it, so it’s something he needs to learn from but it happens to us all.”

Meanwhile, centre half Magnus Okuonghae added: “I didn’t speak to him about it, but he’s supposed to have done something wrong. He’s a young lad, he’ll learn from it and will get stronger from a personal point of view.”
