The 40-year-old had applied for the position and was the bookies favourite to succeed John Still, with his odds slashed to 3/1.

But Hartson, who earned a £2.5m move to Arsenal in 1995, after scoring 13 times in 63 appearances for Town when coming through the ranks, today tweeted: “I would love the Luton job sometime in the future..

“But it’s for another day I hope who is appointed is successful.. Brilliant club #COYH.”

League sponsor Sky Bet still have Hartson at 3/1, followed by Chris Wilder 7/2; Paul Ince 4/1; Gareth Ainsworth 6/1; Andy Awford 8/1; Graham Alexander 10/1 and Lee Clark 10/1
